Fort Volunteer

In May of 2011, both cities of Fort Pierre and Pierre were notified by the Army Corps of Engineers that the water levels of the Missouri River could not be contained and additional efforts and measures would need to be taken to prepare for flooding. Over the course of weeks, thousands had stepped up to volunteer their time to help sandbag, haul, move, and pump in order to prepare and potentially reduce flooding risks.

Fort Volunteer was dedicated to volunteers for their commitment and dedication during the 2011 floods. It was constructed and donated to the City of Fort Pierre by Gary and Connie Grittner on the fifth anniversary of the 2011 floods. (September 2016)
